With the arrival of the Christmas Penguins at the Christmas Market in the shadow of our Gallo-Roman Arc de Germanicus, the Christmas Season has officially opened in the town of Saintes, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle Aquitaine, dans le sud-ouest de la France.
But before I let you in on all the secrets of this year’s seasonal festivities, I’ll give you a quick interim report on last Friday’s festive excursion to a castle in the village of Crazannes, near Saintes, which is world famous for its ancient limestone quarries of brilliant white stone. The 14th-century Château de Crazannes was constructed over the foundation of an 11th-century fortification in this region of the Aquitaine which has seen much strife, especially between the French and English royal houses. Over the centuries, the castle welcomed a number of famous guests, among them the Black Prince et le Roi François Ier. Nowadays, the castle might be best known as the home of Le Chat Botté, dem Gestiefelten Kater, or Puss in Boots, as the French author Charles Perrault modeled the Marquis de Carabas in his version of the fairy tale after the 17th-century owner of Le Château de Crazannes.
Our town of Saintes does not only have 4-flower status in the Villes & Villages Fleuris de France, the highest ranking in floral beautification of public spaces; our town of Saintes is not only listed in the Réseau National des Villes et Pays d’Art et d’Histoire, as an amazing town of Art and History, it is also partnered with six towns across the globe to celebrate common cultures and social connections. We are twinned with Nivelles en Belgique (🇧🇪 since 1956), Tombouctou au Mali (🇲🇱 since 1978; René Caillié, the first European to return from Timbuktu alive was a local), Vladimir en Russie (🇷🇺 since 1988), Salisbury en Grande Bretagne (🇬🇧 since 1990), Cuevas en Espagne (🇪🇸 since 1996, Cuevas & Saintes have a ‘threesome’ twinning with Timbuktu), and Xanten en Allemagne (🇩🇪 since 2002, in old French ‘Saintes’ is spelled Xaintes 😁 Both towns are classified as Ville Musicale, music towns, and both towns go back to ancient Roman times). This last jumelage or twinning is naturally quite interesting for me as a German, not least as we meet every two weeks for Stammtisch!
Et après cette introduction, nous reviendrons enfin sur le sujet de notre excursion au Château de Crazannes. Pour une sortie de Noël, le Comité de jumelage Saintes-Xanten nous a invités à une visite au Château de Crazannes. Nous étions douze d’entre nous prenant la visite guidée du château et ses jardins. Alors, avec mes excuses pour mon mauvais français, allons-y à Crazannes.
Für einen Weihnachtsausflug hat uns der Partnerschaftsausschuss Saintes-Xanten zu einem Besuch im Schloss von Crazannes eingeladen. Zwölf Mitglieder haben bei der Führung durch das Schloss und die Gartenanlagen mitgemacht.
For a Christmas outing, the Saintes-Xanten Twinning Committee invited members to a visit of the Château de Crazannes. Twelve of us took the guided tour of the castle and grounds.
Tourelles et cygnes, le roi fou Louis de Bavière aurait adoré ! Türmchen und Schwäne, König Ludwig hätte’s so schön gefunden! Turrets and swans, mad King Ludwig would’ve loved this!
De là nous avons visité l’intérieur du château – Als Nächstes besichtigten wir die Wohnräume des Schlosses – Next we visited the interior of the castle.
En raison des décorations de Noël propriétaire, la photographie à l’intérieur du château est interdite – Aufgrund des Weihnachtsschmucks ist das Fotografieren im Schloss leider verboten – Owing to proprietary Christmas decorations, photography inside the castle is prohibited.
Toutefois, nous apprécions les boiseries, anciennes et contemporaines ! Nichtsdestotrotz schätzen wir die wunderschönen Holzarbeiten, sowohl die Alten, wie auch die Modernen! Nevertheless, we appreciate the woodwork, both ancient and contemporary!
Après notre visite intérieure, nous entrons dans le pays des merveilles de l’illumination saisonnière du château – Nach unsererem Schlossrundgang stolpern wir in das Wunderland der Weihnachtsbeleuchtung des Schlosses – After our tour, we’re surrounded by the wonderland of the chateau’s seasonal illumination.
De Crazanne, nous sommes allés au restaurant «Vieille Forge» à Saint-Georges-des-Coteaux pour notre dîner de Noël. Von Crazannes aus ging es direkt zur “Alten Schmiede” in St-Georges-des-Coteaux zum festlichen Abendessen. From Crazanne we drove to the “Vieille Forge” restaurant in Saint-Georges-des-Coteaux for our Christmas dinner.
Tous avaient d’amusement, il y avait même un prix pour le quiz assez difficile ! Alle hatten Spaß, es wurde sogar ein Preise vergeben für das ganz schön schwere Quiz! All had fun and there was even a prize for the pretty difficult quiz!
